Hindu Mandir Glasgow is a place of worship and a Scottish charity. It is run by Hindu Mandir Sabha and a committee of volunteers from the community.
In late 1967 a group of Hindu women in Glasgow started meeting for bhajan and kirtan, moving from one home to the next. They collected money as they went, with one aim: a proper place of worship for the community.
In 1971 that money bought a building on Great George Street, and the first Hindu Mandir in Glasgow opened. Hindu Mandir Sabha was set up to run it, with its own constitution, and later became a registered charity.
For years there was no resident priest. One or two came and went. Then in 1992 Acharya Medanipati Mishra, known to everyone as Acharya Ji, arrived and began conducting our ceremonies in the authentic Vedic manner. The community took to him straight away.
On 23 July 2006 we held the Murti Pran Pratishta Mahotsav, led by Acharyas and scholars from India and the UK and coordinated by Acharya Ji. It gave the Mandir its final shape, with the blessings of Dharamratna Swami Sri 1008 Gopal Sharan Ji Maharaj.
The next chapter is downstairs. We want to turn that space into a community centre for Glasgow's Hindu community, and we can only do it with your help.
